Airbrush vs. Traditional Makeup for Wedding: What to Know

While we love both Airbrush and Traditional Makeup applications, each application style has its own pros and cons. Learn how to determine what type of makeup is right for you.

Wedding Airbrush Makeup

AIRBRUSH MAKEUP

As the name suggests, airbrush makeup is not applied with traditional hand tools. Instead, this type of foundation uses a specially designed airbrush gun and makeup air compressor that sprays the face with a lightweight mist. It produces a thin even layer of makeup and creates a natural look with no visible application lines. It's silicone-based, water resistant, and stays on point through hugs, kisses, sweat, and tears.

Airbrush Makeup Pros

  • Survives longer than traditional makeup and gives a smoother look

  • More weatherproof, sweatproof, and waterproof than traditional makeup

  • Is exceptionally lightweight. Most clients say they feel as if they aren’t even wearing makeup

  • Good for clients with oily skin

  • Allows the natural hues in your skin to radiate through the makeup allowing it to look very natural

  • Requires minimal touch-ups

  • Looks beautiful in pictures

  • It does not transfer onto the clothing (e.g. stained wedding dress) and won’t rub off on other people’s clothes when hugging as much as traditional makeup

Airbrush Makeup Cons

  • It only works best on skin that is already in pretty great condition

  • Does not favor all skin types especially if the skin is dry and textured

  • May not stand as strongly against imperfections or acne, scarring, fine lines, or wrinkles

  • Typically more expensive than traditional makeup

  • Not as precise as traditional. It can be hard to re-blend once it's been applied

  • It is not always possible to blend products with airbrush makeup to fit the client's needs and skin types.

Airbrush vs. Traditional Makeup

TRADITIONAL MAKEUP

Traditional makeup encompasses cream, liquid, or powder foundation. Makeup artists can apply a wider variety of textures, levels, and shades of coverage with makeup brushes, sponges, or beauty blenders. Depending on the formula, finishes can appear natural, dewy, or matte.

Traditional Makeup Pros

  • Works for all skin types

  • More control over the final outcome

  • A wider range of formulations designed to meet the needs of various skin types

  • It is versatile and can be combined with others to create makeup that deals with specific blemishes

  • It is more precise because you don’t have to worry about ruining a finish

Traditional Makeup Cons

  • Does not last as long as airbrush makeup

  • It rubs on clothing and can leave a visible stain

  • The durability of a traditional foundation is more water-resistant rather than waterproof

  • May need occasional touch-ups
